We define opportunity as a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. A favorable time, occasion or moment to take appropriate action or move forward. At times, they seem to surround us while at other times it seems the next one will never come. Regardless of the thoughts that come to your mind when you think of the word, you know that it means a chance for improvement and that, for most of us, is all the motivation we need to jump into action. The good news is that opportunity is not something that you have to wait for. In most instances, you have the power to create your own opportunities. Instead of feeling powerless to circumstances beyond your control, here are some tips to help you create new doors to walk through.
1. Create a mindset of abundance.
For many people, their circumstances and environment have put them in a situation where they have a mindset of limitation. They spend much of their time worrying or being anxious about how they will afford the rent or pay the bills. It begins to affect their thinking, their words and their daily habits. By being constantly aware of the lack, they begin to feel the fear of not enough and it prevents them from taking any risks or chances that could take everything away. Like the perpetual movement of a pendulum, the constant thoughts of lack and limitation keep one in an environment of lack and limitation.
On the other hand, there are those that live in a life of limitless abundance. It seems that they are always going somewhere or doing something amazing. They do not worry about how they will afford to pay their bills or how they will get by. They see abundance in their life and it creates a habit of thinking. They aren't afraid to take action because they know that it is their action that creates the positive movement toward their goal. When you see the accomplishment you feel motivated to do more.
Set aside some time each morning to fill your mind with positive thoughts of abundance. See yourself in your minds eye paying that debt, taking that chance, reaching that goal and achieving that dream. When you take the time each morning to meditate on how you would like your life to be, you are able to begin feeling the effects of your thoughts. Practice staying in that mindset of abundance by feeling the feelings before you actually experience them. This act of "believe it before you see it" will help you create and maintain a mindset of abundance.
2. Ask questions.
A well known biblical text tells us to "keep knocking and it will be opened; keep asking and you will receive." My father used to reiterate that by saying that you will never know unless you ask. Sure, whenever you ask for something, there is always a chance that you may not get the answer you were hoping for. But whenever there is a chance that you can move forward, or get closer to the answers that you are hoping for, you must take it. You will never know what options are available to you unless you get curious and ask questions. Sometimes the best opportunities are created not because someone had the right answer, but because someone asked the right question. Each question proposes a need for an answer and an opportunity to be the one to find the answer. When asking for a chance or an opportunity in anything, you are always given a 50/50 chance for a yes. Those are great odds for those that ask the question. The odds are zero when you don't ask. So don't stop knocking on doors and asking.
3. Embrace chaos.
"In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity." This quote by Sun-Tzu reminds us that whenever something is out of order for someone, there lies an opportunity to resolve their issue. For example, with the invention of computer technology came the need for certain programs and codes necessary for us to see the images on our computer screens and have them make sense. When problems began to occur, such as a computer virus for instance, it provided an opportunity for someone to come up with a protection software to resolve such problems. Now we are not suggesting that you cause a problem to be in line to create a solution, but ask questions. See what questions people are asking the most about in your profession or field of interest and what obstacles or challenges they may be facing. Therein lies your opportunity to find or be the solution and provide the answer that someone else may be looking for.
4. Specialize in a solution.
No matter what your chosen field of interest is, there is always a minimum requirement of information that you are going to need to have to even sound like you know what you are talking about. Every industry has a set of standards and rules to play by. There may be jargon and other specific information that you will need to understand. When you are able to demonstrate to yourself and to others that you have the knowledge and expertise in your chosen field, you will be able to establish yourself as the one your colleagues will seek out for the answers. Your reputation as a go to source for people in your field will open new doors for you and open new windows of opportunity.
5. Take action.
Once you have developed your knowledge and expertise you will want to put it into action. One way you can do this is to share some of what you know with others. It's ok to ask people what problems they are facing or see what questions then establish yourself as one who can provide the answers or suggest solutions. By taking the initiative to implement your knowledge where you can really benefit others by resolving a problem or by adding value to their life or business, you will begin to see new opportunities open up all around you. Make a decision to follow these tips and believe that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. There is greatness inside of you only you can let out. Believe it, and you will see it.
